Should we follow writing rules?
The debate. There has long been debate among authors as to whether or not they should follow writing rules. The opinions swing from the die-hard believers that good books must follow every ‘rule’ ever written to those who believe they should be ignored because following rules compromises their creativity. Many assume that editors must all believe in rigidly following ‘rules’, but that is not the case because editing is a lot more than just applying the rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation; at the developmental and line editing stage, editing is an art form where the editor makes informed decisions as to how to best communicate the author’s intent. It doesn’t have to be an either/or opinion. Personally, apart from the conventions of grammar and punctuation that remain current, I think of what some call writing rules as writing tips or guidelines. The idea is to use these guidelines in a way…
Venice. Wow
Not a very eleoquent title for an author, but words fail me at the beauty of Venetian Churches. Mostly you can’t film inside, but we found a small one that you could.

What’s the music of your life?
We all have our own personal music that we dance to, something no one else can hear, something you were born with then added to as you grew and developed into more of who you are. And I don’t mean dancing as in waving your body around – I’m using it as a metaphor – I mean the way you go through your life and intereact with circumstances – that’s your dance. If you sit still and in silence and turn your mind inwards, you might be able to hear your music. Mine is light and playful, but with dramatic overtones. What’s yours? Below is a quote about Ella’s music from my book The Locksmith’s Secret, CLICK HERE to find out more about The Locksmith’s Secret. And don’t forget that the other Prunella Smith book, Worlds Within Worlds is only $1.99 all this month and July. CLICK HERE for retail outlets.
My Contemplative Travel Vlog 1: Two Weeks Before Departure
I’m off to Europe at the end of this month, and I decided to do a travel vlog while I’m away – a contemplative travel vlog in fact. I’m scheduling weekly posts on my other topics – Happiness Hints and How to Meditate – so there’ll still be a steady diet of posts rolling in for those who follow this blog, but in addition you’ll get to follow me around on my travels. Why a contemplative travel vlog? I didn’t think there was any point adding to the million travel vlogs that are already out there unless I took a different stance, so I have. I’ve decided to take a contemplative angle on traveling. It’s the natural emphasis for me since I view the world from a spiritual point of view anyway – mostly. Perhaps people may find my vision of the world and the processs of travelling interesting. Perhaps not. If no one watches it,…
Have you ever dreamed of a room floating in space?
One of my favourite narrative threads in The Locksmith’s Secret is that of the ephemeral city, a transparent city that floats in outerspace and to which Ella returns night after night, searching for the locksmith. Below is a picture quote from one of the scenes, and if you’d like to read more, you’ll find some excerpts in the Free Fiction blog category here – or you could buy the book, of course! CLICK HERE for more information and retail outlets. If you’ve read it already, or read a few of the excerpts, I’d love to know what you thought of these dream sequences. Do they remind you of your dreams at all? What do you think they mean? Why is there only one other person in this whole city? And don’t forget that the other Prunella Smith book, Worlds Within Worlds is only $1.99 until the end of July. CLICK HERE for retail outlets.
