That Sluggish Morning Feeling
You know that feeling when you wake up, and it’s like a heavy weight is pressing down on you? Maybe you’ve just clawed your way out of a deep, vivid dream, and everything feels heavy. You groan, stretch, and think, How am I supposed to get going today?
I know that feeling. Some mornings, it feels like my body and mind are stuck in molasses. But the other day, something shifted for me.
What We Usually Do
When we feel sluggish in the morning, I think many of us default to things like coffee, scrolling through our phones, or just trudging through the motions until we feel awake. It’s like we’re waiting for something external to kickstart us.
But what if the spark we’re waiting for is already inside us?
A New Way to Wake Up
That morning, instead of dragging myself to the kitchen, I stepped outside. The sun was warm on my face, and I stretched under its light. It’s something I try to do every morning, but this time, I added something new.
I started singing.
It wasn’t a song I knew—it was just something I made up on the spot. I sang, “Let’s get this show on the road,” over and over, like a little mantra. And as I sang, I started moving, dancing a bit, shaking off the sleep.
It was simple, silly even, but it worked. I felt awake, alive, and ready to start the day.
Following Inspiration
Here’s the funny part: as I kept singing, I realized, This could actually be a song. So I sat down and wrote it. That wasn’t what I’d planned to do that day, but I’ve learned to follow my inspiration when it strikes.
By the end of the morning, I had a song. But more than that, I had a reminder: every day is a fresh start.
What I Realised
Here are a few things that morning reminded me about:
– Movement and music can shift energy. Sometimes, all it takes is a stretch or a song to shake off the heaviness.
– Mornings are a blank slate. Each day is a chance to create something new, even if it’s just a small moment of joy.
– Inspiration doesn’t follow schedules. When we’re open to it, even a sluggish morning can turn into something creative and meaningful.
– It’s okay to be playful. Singing a made-up song to yourself might feel silly, but who cares? If it brings you energy and joy, it’s worth it.
Why it Matters
I think mornings set the tone for the rest of the day. When we start with intention—even if it’s as simple as stepping into the sun or singing a little tune—we remind ourselves that we have agency. We can choose how we show up, even when we feel stuck or sluggish.
And maybe that’s the bigger lesson: every day is a chance to begin again. Whether we succeed or stumble doesn’t matter as much as the act of starting.
A Gentle Encouragement
So tomorrow morning, or the next time you wake up feeling heavy or slow, maybe try something different. Step outside. Stretch. Sing a little song, even if it’s just for yourself.
Who knows? It might just be the start of something beautiful.
Do you ever sing and/or dance in the morning?
