It’s easy when writing a memoir to forget to start with an inciting incident. That lack is why memoirs that start with something like, ‘I was born in 1955 in a small town hospital,’ don’t grab your attention. You might think that usual story structure doesn’t apply to memoirs, but a memoir is still a story. And in the most engaging memoirs, the author takes an angle on that story, so the inciting incident should be something that relates to the angle taken for the story telling.
I fell into this mistake in my latest writing/art project, Psychemagination. It’s a memoir of a psychological journey, embellished with fantastical art that reflects my imaginative view of my inner world. I realised suddenly the other day, that I had left out the whole reason for the psychological exploration that forms the content of the story. I had dived into the journey without saying why I was taking it! Big mistake.
My excuse for this blunder is that initially I approached this project more through the art than the writing, and also writing down the inciting incident for the story meant that I had to ‘come out’ to the world as nuerodivergent. Will that change how people perceive me? Probably. Will it affect my business? I hope not – part of the reason why I’m a good editor is my neurodivergent brain, but people won’t necessarily know that.
Anyone wanting to write a memoir that does justice to their life story by making it something engaging that people will want to read (rather than slogging through it because it’s family history) face this kind of issue. Good writing goes deep, and so you have to dig down into those feelings and hidden places and expose them to the world. Not everyone wants to do that. It’s challenging, yes, but also freeing.
