The inciting incident is one key element that plays a crucial role in story development. As a writer, I have always been fascinated by the power of storytelling. Whether it’s a gripping novel, a captivating movie, or an engaging TV series, a well-crafted story has the ability to transport us to different worlds, evoke emotions, and leave a lasting impact. But have you ever wondered what makes a story truly compelling? A well-crafted inciting incident is one of the important elements for achieving that goal. I remembered this and wrote this article when I realised that I’d forgotten this very important point in my latest project.

What is the Inciting Incident?
The inciting incident is the event or situation that sets the story in motion. It is the catalyst that disrupts the protagonist’s ordinary world and forces them to embark on a journey of change and growth. This pivotal moment is often found at the beginning of a story and serves as the trigger for the main conflict. Without a strong and well-executed inciting incident, a story may lack the necessary intrigue and fail to captivate the reader.
The Role of the Inciting Incident in Capturing the Reader’s Attention
In today’s fast-paced world, capturing the reader’s attention from the very beginning is more important than ever. With countless distractions competing for our time and interest, it is essential to grab the reader’s attention right from the start. The inciting incident serves this purpose by presenting a compelling and intriguing event that hooks the reader and makes them invested in the story.
A well-crafted inciting incident introduces a sense of urgency and raises questions in the reader’s mind. It creates a desire to uncover what happens next and keeps them eagerly turning the pages. Whether it’s a shocking revelation, a life-altering decision, or a mysterious occurrence, the inciting incident must be significant enough to make the reader care about the protagonist’s journey.
Questions to Ask When Crafting the Inciting Event
Crafting a powerful inciting incident requires careful thought and consideration. Here are some questions to ask yourself during the development process:
- What is the protagonist’s ordinary world like before it?
- What event or situation will disrupt their ordinary world and set the story in motion?
- How does the inciting incident relate to the main conflict of the story?
- What emotions or reactions do you want to evoke in the reader?
- Does the incident create a sense of urgency and make the reader eager to know what happens next?
By asking these questions, you can ensure that your inciting event is well-aligned with the overall story and effectively captures the reader’s attention.
How the Inciting Incident Sets the Stage for the Rest of the Story
The inciting incident is not just a standalone event; it sets the stage for the rest of the story. It establishes the initial conflict, introduces key characters, and lays the groundwork for the protagonist’s journey. The choices and actions taken by the protagonist in response to the inciting incident shape the entire storyline.
Furthermore, this incident often foreshadows the challenges and obstacles the protagonist will face throughout the story. It creates a ripple effect that propels the narrative forward and creates a sense of anticipation in the reader. By carefully planning and executing this initial event, you can set the tone and direction for the entire story.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
While the inciting incident is a powerful tool for story development, there are some common mistakes that writers should be aware of and avoid. One such mistake is making it too predictable or cliché. If the reader can anticipate what it will be from a mile away, it loses its impact and fails to capture their attention.
Another mistake is making it too disconnected from the rest of the story. It should not be an isolated event that has no bearing on the protagonist’s journey or the main conflict. The inciting incident should seamlessly integrate with the overall storyline and propel the narrative forward.
Lastly, it is important to avoid making it too overwhelming or confusing. While it should be significant enough to create intrigue, it should not bombard the reader with too much information or leave them feeling lost. Striking the right balance is the key.
Techniques for Crafting a Compelling Inciting Incident
Crafting a compelling inciting incident requires a combination of creativity, planning, and storytelling techniques. Here are some techniques that can help you create a powerful and engaging inciting incident:
- Start with a Bang: Begin the story with a high-impact event or revelation that immediately grabs the reader’s attention.
- Create Conflict: Introduce a conflict or dilemma that forces the protagonist to make a choice or take action.
- Use Foreshadowing: Hint at the incident throughout the story, building suspense and anticipation.
- Evoke Emotion: Make it emotionally charged to create a strong connection between the reader and the protagonist.
- Make it Relevant: Ensure that it is directly tied to the main conflict and has a meaningful impact on the protagonist’s journey.
By employing these techniques, you can craft a compelling inciting incident that captivates the reader and sets the stage for an unforgettable story.
Developing the Storyline around the Inciting Incident
Once you have established a strong inciting incident, it is important to develop the storyline in a way that keeps the reader engaged and invested. This important initial episode should not be a standalone event; it should serve as the foundation upon which the story is built.
As you develop the storyline, consider how the protagonist’s choices and actions in response to the inciting incident will shape their character arc. Each subsequent event and conflict should be directly influenced by it, leading to a natural progression of the story.
Additionally, use it as a guide to maintain a sense of purpose and direction throughout the story. Continually refer back to it and its implications to ensure a cohesive and compelling narrative.
Examples of Successful Inciting Incidents in Popular Stories
To truly understand the power of the inciting incident, let’s examine some examples from popular stories:
- In J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” the inciting incident occurs when Harry receives his acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This event disrupts his ordinary world and thrusts him into a world of magic and adventure.
- In “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, the inciting incident takes place when Katniss volunteers as a tribute in place of her younger sister Prim. This decision sets in motion the deadly competition and forces Katniss to fight for her life.
- In the movie “The Matrix,” the inciting incident occurs when Neo is contacted by the mysterious hacker Morpheus. This event leads Neo to question the nature of reality and ultimately join the fight against the machines.
See how these events create intrigue, establish the main conflict, and propel the story forward?
What about Memoirs?
It’s easy when writing a memoir to forget to start with an inciting incident. That lack is why memoirs that start with something like, ‘I was born in 1955 in a small town hospital,’ don’t grab your attention. You might think that usual story structure doesn’t apply to memoirs, but a memoir is still a story. And in the most engaging memoirs, the author takes an angle on that story, so the inciting incident should be something that relates to the angle taken for the story telling.
I fell into this mistake in my latest writing/art project, Psychemagination. It’s a memoir of a psychological journey, embellished with fantastical art that reflects my imaginative view of my inner world. I realised suddenly the other day, that I had left out the whole reason for the psychological exploration that forms the content of the story. I had dived into the journey without saying why I was taking it! Big mistake.
My excuse for this blunder is that initially I approached this project more through the art than the writing, and also writing down the inciting incident for the story meant that I had to ‘come out’ to the world as nuerodivergent. Will that change how people perceive me? Probably. Will it affect my business? I hope not – part of the reason why I’m a good editor is my neurodivergent brain, but people won’t necessarily know that.
Anyone wanting to write a memoir that does justice to their life story by making it something engaging that people will want to read (rather than slogging through it because it’s family history) face this kind of issue. Good writing goes deep, and so you have to dig down into those feelings and hidden places and expose them to the world. Not everyone wants to do that. It’s challenging, yes, but also freeing.
Anyway, I quickly added the missing element into my Pyschemagination webbook, and you can see it there now. It really does drive the story and should have been there all along, but I wasn’t ready to tell that part until now. That’s the magic of the memoir-writing process; it makes us face ourselves!
Conclusion
In conclusion, the inciting incident plays a crucial role in story development. It captures the reader’s attention, sets the stage for the rest of the story, and drives the protagonist’s journey. By carefully crafting a compelling inciting incident and developing the storyline around it, writers can harness its power to create captivating and memorable stories.
So, the next time you embark on a writing journey, remember the importance of the inciting incident. See the inciting incident I’ve added to the beginning of Psychemagination and witness firsthand how a well-executed inciting incident can transform a story into a truly immersive experience. If you’ve already taken a look at Psychemagination without it there, you’ll see what I mean.
