There’s a kind of magic in the forest that doesn’t show itself to the eye, but can be felt in the body—especially when we walk slowly, quietly, and listen.

When I enter the bushland near my home on the south coast of NSW, I don’t just see trees and birds and fungi—I feel a hum beneath it all. A kind of quiet, nurturing aliveness that seems to exist just beyond the visible. It’s as though the forest is full of hidden helpers—tiny beings that keep the energy flowing and the system alive. Not in a literal sense, but in a deeply felt one. That’s what inspired The Hidden Forest, my latest AI-generated music video.
Set to Kris Newland’s meditative track Frozen in Time, this short video is a gentle celebration of that unseen world. Cute forest spirits, fungi sprites, glowing birds, curious koalas, and leafy guardians wander through dreamy digital landscapes—each one representing some aspect of the life-force that animates the forest. It’s playful and sweet, yes—but it’s also a kind of visual metaphor for something bigger: the sense that the forest is alive on many levels, not all of which we can name.
Creating this piece was part of my introspective AI art process. I don’t start with a plan or a visual goal—I start with a feeling. The same feeling I get when I step off the path and sink into the green silence of the trees. From there, I let the art unfold, guided by intuition, curiosity, and the desire to express something intangible. AI becomes the mirror—reflecting back imagery I can respond to, adjust, and build upon until it captures the emotional tone I’m reaching for.
This is not an indigenous view of the Australian forest. I am of European descent, and though I have a deep sense of country and am no doubt tuning into the same energies as anyone sensitive to the aliveness of nature, my feelings are mine to express as I wish. I cannot create my art through any other cultural framework than my own, and it would not be appropriate to do so.
The Hidden Forest focuses on the nurturing aspect of forest energy. It’s joyful, comforting, and light-hearted. But I know that this is only one aspect of what the forest holds. Beneath that friendly hum are also shadows, mysteries, and wildness. At some point, I plan to explore those too, and to go beyond this ‘fairy’ style of expression, to deepen the imagery beyond this plain of existence. But for now, this piece is an offering of warmth—an invitation to pause, breathe, and remember that we are never alone in nature. That even when we cannot see them, tiny forces are at work, holding the ecosystem—and perhaps us—in a quiet kind of care.
