Have you ever felt the pull of something you can’t name, an undercurrent steering your choices, your words, your moods, long after the moment that first sparked it? That’s the echo of being at work, what drives us without us our knowing. The emotional energy of past events reverberates through your life until you notice it, and choose differently.
In my new artwork – see below – I used an AI music generator to turn my poem The Echo of Being into a song, which I illustrated with imagery created with an AI art generator and then turned into video. In this piece I ask:
“Do you sense the echo of being reverberating through time?
Past actions following us through life,
And propelling us into the future,
Their emotional energy remaining,
Like ghosts of possibilities.”
Those lines point to a simple truth: none of us emerges from childhood untouched. Maybe it was a harsh word overheard at dinner, a small betrayal by a friend, or the first time you learned to hide your tears. Even ‘small’ traumas leave shadows in our unconscious—and those shadows often run our lives, shaping habits we can’t break and reactions we can’t explain. Knowing what drives us, developing an awareness of these unconscious forces in our psyche, is an important step towards emotional freedom.
Think of a habit you’ve tried to quit. You know it holds you back—yet the moment you’re stressed or tired, there it is again. That’s the echo at work: an impulse fired by an unexamined wound. Until we shine a light on it, it thrives in the dark.
Art therapy offers a fun way in. By giving form to the unseen—through paint, collage, clay or, in my case, AI-generated imagery—we invite those hidden forces into the light. Suddenly the ghost of that dinner-table criticism becomes a mask in our artwork. The moment we name it, it loses power. We begin to see what drives us, and by expressing it in a form outside ourselves, we can see that this reaction isn’t some unchangeable aspect of ‘me’—it’s a memory in motion.
You don’t need to be an artist to try this. Introspective AI art lets you work with symbols without worrying about drawing skills. You type a prompt like ‘a white bird carrying old regrets’ or ‘a labyrinth of half-forgotten memories’ and the image appears. Then you pause, take a breath, then examine and refine the image until it speaks to you. Then you ask: What is this telling me about my story?
Breaking free from unseen forces is an act of conscious choice. Every time you step away from that old impulse, every time you recognise the echo and decide, ‘I don’t have to follow that’, you create a new pattern. You reclaim your own direction. Your change your karma.
So listen for the echo of being in your own life. Notice the small habits and recurring feelings that seem to come from nowhere. Then turn toward them with curiosity and compassion. Use art—AI art, paint, words, movement—to make the unconscious conscious. Because only when we face those shadows can we choose to step into the light.
I hope you enjoy my video expressing this concept.
If this song and it’s related concepts resonates with you, I invite you to explore Psychemagination: Into the Underworld—a lyrical journey into the hidden forces that shape us. The pre-release ebook is on sale now in a bundle with the Introspective AI Art Guide.
Do you sense these kinds of echoes working in your own life? Please share your thoughts. I love getting comments.
