I picked this book up from Netgalley and was pleasantly surprised to find another original idea in a market that in some areas, at least, seems to favour the tired and true, which for some of us, translates into the old and hackneyed. Perception is the story of Zoe a GAP, or genetically altered person, and Noah, a natural, or not genetically altered. Their story takes place in a future where the GAPs, who live for a couple of hundred years, are the upper class. They live in walled towns with everything they need and entry to their towns is restricted only to naturals who have passes because they work for the GAPs. Zoe's brother dies outside the GAP town and no one seems particular interested in finding out what happened, so Zoe decides to find out for herself. She runs into her maid's son, Noah and despite their differences, they soon become fond of each other, too fond for Zoe's family. You'll need to read the book to find out just how far Zoe's family is prepared to go to keep her … [Read more...]
A tight, well-written story: Ink by Amanda Sun
Ink is a young adult urban fantasy with a difference. Set in Japan, instead of the usual vampires, werewolves and witches, we have kami, Japanese gods. The common belief among those who gave credence to their existence is that the kami were wiped out at the end of the Second World War when the allies forced the emperor to renounce his divinity, but as in all urban fantasies, the magical exists right beneath the noses of ordinary people. The mark of a kami is that their drawings move, hence the ink. The story involves Katie, an American girl living in Japan with her Aunt after the death of her mother, and Tomo a Japanese boy whose kami heritage is so strong that he can't control the ink. His drawings leap of the page and attack with very real teeth and claws. Katie knows there's something strange about him. She knows she should avoid him, but she falls in love with him anyway, and it's a shock when she realises the truth. Tomo is so powerful that others who learn about his hidden … [Read more...]

This is the last day of the Demon's Grip blog tour and it's a review of book one Lethal Inheritance (with the old cover, but never mind). The reviewer says she wonders why she didn't read it before, if you're like her, perhaps it's time to take the plunge. Anyway take a look at what else Kayla says about Lethal Inheritance. http://caughtbetweenthepages.wordpress.com/2013/08/20/blog-tour-lethal-inheritance-by-tahlia-newland/ … [Read more...]
Blew my mind: another blog tour stop, another rave review
I recently wrote a review about a book that blew me away and the author contacted me and said how wonderful it was that I 'got it'. That's how I feel about the latest review of Demon's Grip. Thanks, Stacy. Stacy from Book Broads says,' I just got done reading this book and it blew my mind.' That's a pretty good opener! She goes on to show that she appreciated the thoughtful contemplative nature of this book. Pop on over and have a read. http://bookbroads.blogspot.com.au/?zx=16acde509256d7fa … [Read more...]
“Thoughtful, reflective & different to the previous books in the series”
Another review of Demon's Grip and a different angle. This is actually more the kind of response I expected for this book and was surprised at the two 5 star reviews that practically raved about it. It's still a four star review and I think the reviewer was very perceptive in her comments about the books' place in the series. Here's the link to the review. http://wp.me/p2phbU-em … [Read more...]

YA metaphysical fiction: The Huaca by Marcia Mickelson
The Huaca Marcia Mickelson Sweetwater, Cedar Fort, Inc. Young adult urban fantasy. This young adult novel, though categorised as urban fantasy, is more like contemporary fiction in that the fantasy aspect is minimal and, rather than a story of magic and supernatural powers, it is primarily a study of a girl whose life has changed traumatically, and is still changing. And since the fantasy element is based on an Inca myth about the nature of life after death, the story can most correctly be described as metaphysical fiction. Ellie's mother was murdered six months ago. Her father looks after her well, clearly loves her dearly, but won't talk about her mother. Her best friend has become distant. They've been growing apart for a while now, and the unravelling of their friendship as Ellie chooses to make her own decisions, rather than those that will satisfy her friend, makes up a large part of the first portion of the book. This dying friendship doesn't actually have anything to do … [Read more...]
Different & poignant: Secret Reflection by Jennifer Brassel
Secret Reflection Jennifer Brassel Escape Publishing, Harlequin Enterprises Australia Fantasy romance Secret Reflection is a good read for anyone who likes contemporary fantasy romance and gentlemen from the nineteenth century. The story of a man trapped in a mirror in the mid nineteenth century by a Druid sorcerer is unusual and poignant, in this case, especially because of the circumstances surrounding the incarceration. Kelly is an American reporter visiting her long time friend in England where she and her husband are in the process of turning an old English home into a hotel. They ask Kelly to investigate the ghost that is supposed to reside in the house. The idea being that an article proving the ghosts existence will bring customers. so Kelly sets out to disprove the ghosts existence. She soon discovers that he does exist, but not as a ghost. The magic that has imprisoned him means that only the person who sleeps in his bed can see him. And only for eighteen days every … [Read more...]
A contemporary fantasy that rivals such young adult favorites as J.K. Rowling and Rick Riordian
The title of this post was something that Awesome Indies Approved reviewer Tammy Dewhurst said about my book, Lethal Inheritance. It's always nice to be compared to a famous writer. Here's some other things she said about it. "I was hooked from the moment Ariel watches as her mother is kidnapped. The brilliant economy of words employed by Newland in conveying the event magnify the terror felt by a girl in hiding and her mother who does not know what has become of her." "Newland provides us with a depth to even the briefest of encounters. Her settings are so rich and wonderfully described that a reader can feel as though they’re approaching Diamond Peak." Mist by Susan Krinard: Norse gods in San Fransisco; awesome urban metaphysical fantasy.
Title: Mist Author: Susan Krinard Publisher: Macmillan-Tor/Forge Genre: Urban/metaphysical/magical realism fantasy Pub Date Jul 16 2013 Mist grabbed me and pulled me right into the story from the beginning. It was as if I was there in San Francisco with Mist, a Vaylkerie and daughter of Freyer a powerful Norse god. Mist has been in Midgard - earth -for thousands of years, left here when the gods disappeared. She thought they'd gone forever but learns from an elf - she thought there were none of them left in Midgard either until he turned up - that they had been banished to a formless world, and now bridges were appearing between the worlds and the frost giants had begun crossing over. The action begins early. We just have enough time to get to know Mist before her world changes and she's battling for her life. She discovers that her lover of 6 months is in fact the trickster god Loki, master of the giants. He steals the staff entrusted into her care by Odin - head god - and … [Read more...]
