Title: Tooth and Nail Author: Jennifer Safrey Publisher: Night Shade Books Pub Date: February 07, 2012 Category: Urban Fantasy I never thought I’d be reading a story about a tooth fairy, but in ‘Tooth and Nail’, Jennifer Safrey takes the premise that such fairies are real, gives them a credible reason for teeth stealing, and weaves it into an awesome and surprising urban fantasy. The Blurb Gemma Fae Cross, a tough-girl amateur boxer whose fiancé is running for congress, has just made a startling discovery about herself. She is half faerie - and not just any faerie, but a tooth faerie! A hybrid of fae and human, Gemma is destined to defend the Olde Way and protect the fae - who are incapable of committing violence - from threats to their peaceful and idyllic way of life, which must be maintained by distilling innocence collected from children's baby teeth. But when a threat to the fae mission emerges, Gemma is called upon to protect her heritage, and become a legendary fae … [Read more...]

Review: The Hermetica of Elysium by Annemarie Banks
Title : The Hermetica of Elysium Author: Annemarie Banks Publisher: Knox Robinson Publishing Category: Historical literature/romance/fantasy When the publisher approached me with this book and asked if I’d review it, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to or not, because historical romance is a genre that doesn’t generally interest me. However, the fantasy element and the theme of the power of words and philosophy drew me in and I discovered a rich and surprising read that far surpasses what this books genre designation would have you expect. We meet the central character, Nadira in 1494 in Barcelona, where she is a servant to a wealthy spice merchant. A man badly beaten by mercenaries looking for the book, The Hermetica of Elysium is brought to the merchant’s stable. When his brother comes looking for him, the man is already dead, but he discovers that Nadira can read Ancient Greek, Latin, Arabic and Hebrew making her one of the few people who can read the book they seek. While the Black … [Read more...]
Review : Book of Mercy by Sherry Roberts
Title: Book of Mercy Author: Sherry Roberts Publisher: www.osmyrrahpublishing.com Publication date: September 2011 Category : Fiction/Contemporary Women/ Humor/Relationships The Book of Mercy is a truly beautiful, heart-warming novel on book censorship, the nature of love, motherhood and friendship. I loved this book from the first page to the end, which had me in tears of joy - I’m a softy. When a group of influential women decide to remove “undesirable” books from the school library, Antigone Brown, a woman with dyslexia who keeps a stone in her pocket to help her remember right from left and despairs of ever being a good mother to her unborn child stands up for people’s rights to determine what they will read rather than having a bunch of self appointed guardians of local morality do it for them. Antigone ponders: how do we protect our children from the world but save the world for our children? The story strips the issue of censorship down to its bare bones of power and control … [Read more...]
Review: The Disenchanted Pet by Kate Policani
Title: The Disenchanted Pet Author: Kate Policani Publisher: Kate Policani Available now at Amazon and Smashwords Category: Adult/young adult Science Fiction/fantasy The Disenchanted Pet is pure Indie gold, one of those books that makes me really glad that authors can publish their work so easily these days. If that weren’t the case, I would never had read this little gem. It’s a good example of something that would never be picked up by a publishing house, not because it’s not good enough – it is in fact extremely well written - but simply because it doesn’t fit the narrow parameters of what the traditional publishing industry is looking for. There would have been no point in Kate offering it to even an agent and for many of the reasons that makes it so wonderful. It’s too short for it to be profitable in print, but a perfect movie-length read for the ebook market. It’s set in the future but isn’t your usual kind of science fiction. It’s thought provoking, one of the … [Read more...]
Review – Blood Rock by Anthony Francis
Title: Blood Rock SubTitle: Book Two, THE SKIN DANCER SERIES Author: Anthony Francis Publisher: Bell Bridge Books Pub Date: 08/16/2011 Category: Urban Fantasy Blood Rock, like its prequel Frost Moon – my review here - is the best of urban fantasy, gritty, creative, engaging and with a unique premise – graffiti that kills. Francis creates a world where not only are witches, werekin ( eg werewolves, werebears, weretigers, werestags and so on) and vampires known, but also tattoos can be magic. When inked on an ordinary person, they can move, sparkle and maybe lift off, but when inked on a skindancer like Dakota Frost, they have enormous magical power. Dakota is a magical tattooist and the epitome of a kick-ass heroine and this time her talents are required to deal with Graffiti that comes to life in the dark heart of Atlanta's oldest cemetery and kills her friend, and one of the city's best loved vampires, before her eyes. And this is just the first of many. The graffiti ends up … [Read more...]
