Eternal Destiny has its first review and it's 5 stars. It's by Awesome Indies reviewer, Clive Johnson. A couple of excerpts: "Following on from the previous books in the series, all the characters continue to gain depth and colour, discovering more about themselves. This is particularly true of Ariel and Nick, and their relationship. Nick's long running fears about his ability to defeat Cogin are also resolved, but with a twist I'd best not reveal here, other than to say that it marries well with the overall thrust of the deeper narrative." "The writing is of a high standard, effortlessly bringing the tale alive and making it thoroughly engaging. A fine end to the Diamond Peak Series." An elegant & moving historical romance: Salvation by Harriet Steel
Salvation is the moving story of woman, Meg, and a man, Tom, who lived in England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth the first. Meg, married off by her parents to a man she can never love, has a lover, her childhood sweetheart, Tom, but Ralph, an unsavoury character finds out and bribes Tom to leave town. If he doesn't, Ralph will tell Meg's husband, a rich and powerful man, and neither Meg nor Tom's life will be worth living. When Tom's employer is found murdered and Tom gone, the police assume that Tom committed the murder and so begins a tale that takes the reader on a vivid journey through life in 16th century London set against the backdrop of the threat of Spanish invasion. It's a story with many unpredictable turns, and so riveting that I truly couldn't put it down. Meg leaves her husband and, along with her maid, sets out to find Tom. Her journey takes her from a life of luxury to that of a washer woman, and many things in between. Tom ends up in prison and if it weren't … [Read more...]
Don’t miss this awesome YA paranormal novel: Incubus by Jennifer Quintez
I read Thrall the first book in the Daughters of Lilith Series some time ago and I remember thinking it was pretty good, so I readily agreed to read the second in the series. I wasn't disappointed, in fact, I was delighted to find a (for me) rare 5 star read. Incubus has everything needed to make a top book - strong, well-drawn characters with real relationships and motivations that tug at our heart-stings; a unique concept; immediate and engaging writing, and a riveting plot with an unexpected twist at the end.Braedyn is a Lilitu, a succubus demon, but she's not evil. Her father is a member of the Guard that protects human kind from the Lilitu, and Braedyn is on their side. She also has a boyfriend, Lucus that she has to keep her distance from because if she lets her Lilitu side take over when they kiss, she will drain his energy, which is, of course, a complete no no. Braedyn wants to become human so she can have a physical relationship with Lucas and eventually marry and have a … [Read more...]
Don’t miss this moving short story about facing death: It’s FREE until the end of the month
A lovely, surprising tale, told with warmth and depth, this surreal short story switches between an ancient world and our modern one. Is the main character an unwilling sacrifice to foreign gods, or a modern woman battling deadly cancer? Who is dreaming who? Through juxtaposing seemingly different life experiences, we find a poignant commonality between the characters as they face death. FREE until the end of the month. Download it now on Amazon And don't forget to write a review . What readers are saying. 'Not Me, it Can't Be' is far more haunting than any short story should be. As in much of Newland's work, the lines between fantasy and reality are blurred to the extent where the reader is left wondering which is the imagined and which is the real world. The juxtaposition of the two women's situations raises big questions which are delicately crafted so they linger in the mind long after reading. I love a haunting story though and this one is beautiful." Rose, Goodreads … [Read more...]
A book fantasy fans shouldn’t miss: Sunbolt by Intisar Khanani
Sunbolt is an exemplary fantasy story about a gutsy young woman with half-trained magical powers who gets caught while helping a family escape from an overlord. The parents are killed and she and the children end up in the cells of the perpetrator, a clearly evil man. The prognosis looks pretty dire when the evil overlord hands her over to a Fang. She ends up being dragged through a portal to a land far away where she is thrown into a tower as food for a Breather, a creature similar to a Fang, except that they feed on life force, not blood. An unusual alliance is formed and the book ends in a place that sets us up for a terrific series. I look forward to it. Khanani is a brilliant writer. Her prose is elegant and evocative, and her characters are real, complex people who leap off the page with vibrancy. The action holds you captive. The pace moves smoothly from gut wrenching action to slower character driven scenes with ease, providing a journey of varying pace. The character of Val … [Read more...]
A highly engaging YA fantasy: Grounded by G.P. Ching
I love a good book and I loved this one. It's wonderful to read something so confident, sleek and delightfully different. YA fantasy became bogged down in vampires, witches and werewolves for some time, then we had a spate of dystopian novels and a bit of steampunk. Stories of the Fae have always been a standard, but I have never read anything like quite like this. Not only is it different, it's seamless. Lydia is an Amish girl in a future where the Amish community lives in a walled off area near a defunct nuclear reactor. When the reactor blew, the land around was abandoned, but the Amish stayed and the ruling party left them to it because no one wanted the land. They're supposed to stay behind the wall, but there is a secret gate and the young Amish can choose to visit the Englisher's world for a time before, if they decide to return, they take their baptism to commit to the Amish way of life. The story begins in the Amish world with Lydia and her best friend Jeremiah. He wants … [Read more...]
A tight, well-written story: Ink by Amanda Sun
Ink is a young adult urban fantasy with a difference. Set in Japan, instead of the usual vampires, werewolves and witches, we have kami, Japanese gods. The common belief among those who gave credence to their existence is that the kami were wiped out at the end of the Second World War when the allies forced the emperor to renounce his divinity, but as in all urban fantasies, the magical exists right beneath the noses of ordinary people. The mark of a kami is that their drawings move, hence the ink. The story involves Katie, an American girl living in Japan with her Aunt after the death of her mother, and Tomo a Japanese boy whose kami heritage is so strong that he can't control the ink. His drawings leap of the page and attack with very real teeth and claws. Katie knows there's something strange about him. She knows she should avoid him, but she falls in love with him anyway, and it's a shock when she realises the truth. Tomo is so powerful that others who learn about his hidden … [Read more...]
An excellent work of literary fiction: Ripple: A Tale of Hope and Redemption by E.L Farris
This is an excellent work of literary fiction, well written, moving and thought provoking, in fact, at times, downright disturbing. Truly, if we didn't find it disturbing, there'd be something wrong with us. In just a few scenes we are shown that, despite our laws, there is still precious little justice for rape victims today. Are they really going to ask that fifteen year old to stand up in public and identify her father as her rapist? Yes, they are, and there is nothing the women can do to stop it. Farris has taken the heart-wrenching topic of incestuous sexual abuse and approached it bravely. She has delved into the guilt, the shame and the horror felt by the victim, a fifteen year old girl raped many times by her father, and the girl's mother, a high powered lawyer who spent more time at work than she did with her daughter. This absence from the daughter's life in pursuit of a career is a topic that many women and, I hope, men will relate to. Phoebe couldn't have become her … [Read more...]

Blew my mind: another blog tour stop, another rave review
I recently wrote a review about a book that blew me away and the author contacted me and said how wonderful it was that I 'got it'. That's how I feel about the latest review of Demon's Grip. Thanks, Stacy. Stacy from Book Broads says,' I just got done reading this book and it blew my mind.' That's a pretty good opener! She goes on to show that she appreciated the thoughtful contemplative nature of this book. Pop on over and have a read. http://bookbroads.blogspot.com.au/?zx=16acde509256d7fa … [Read more...]
