Life Is a Circus – A Song Born by the Stream

One afternoon, I went for a walk through the rainforest behind my house. The air was soft, the light dappled, and as I reached the stream that winds through my property, Diamond Light, the first line of a poem dropped into my mind: Life is a circus with clowns all around. I sat on a log by the water, letting the rhythm of the stream carry my thoughts, and the rest of the poem flowed through me like a quiet revelation.

I’d just watched Planet America, an Australian TV show that offers commentary on US politics, and I was struck by how surreal and absurd the political landscape had become—particularly the spectacle surrounding the Trump regime. It felt like watching a circus, complete with illusion, performance, and misplaced reverence. The lines “Fools see fake magic and believe it’s profound. Easily led by a piper with pipe, we mistake the devil for a saviour with might” came from that reflection—an emotional response to the strange theatre of power and perception.

The poem became a song, and the song became a surreal music video—Life is a Circus. It’s a satirical offering, but also a contemplative one.
