Is there anyone who wouldn’t like to live in peace and clarity?
Imagine going through every moment of your day feeling peaceful inside, no matter what happens outside.
Imagine having a clear mind no matter how busy you are and how crazy your life is.
Imagine having no stress even when facing stressful situations.
Sounds good, doesn’t it?
Does it sound like paradise to you? It is. Paradise is not outside. It’s inside. Happiness is too. Inside, I mean.
Is there anyone who wouldn’t choose to live their life that way if they thought they could?
But is living in peace and clarity possible?
Does it sound somewhat unobtainable? So far out of reach that you don’t start on the path that will lead to it?
Or does it just seem really difficult?
I totally get that. Life can be overwhelming sometimes and peace can seem a very long way away. But it’s not. It’s very close. It’s just a matter of turning our mind in a different direction.
I practice living in peace and clarity every moment of the day. I don’t always succeed. Sometimes my mind is clearer than at other times, and it’s harder to stay in that state when other people are around, but I’m practicing, and I’m getting better at it, so it is possible.
Look at His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He does it, so it really is possible.
I know; you’re not the Dalai Lama, and I’m not either, but we sure can live our lives in a clearer and more peaceful state than most of us are at the moment.
So how do you do it?
First you have to understand that a clear and peaceful mind is your natural state. Yep. But believing that about our true nature is quite a leap for some to make. The good news is that you don’t have to believe me; you can experience it directly. Once you’ve tasted it in yourself, your understanding will become a realisation. And that isn’t so hard to taste, you just have to have really good meditation instructions, ones that are clear and precise, and you have to practice. Even better is a really good teacher, one that embodies that state. I’m lucky because I have an awesome teacher, Sogyal Rinpoche. Just sitting in his presence, or even watching him on video, can be enough for you to taste that inner peace and clarity – if you’re open to it.
And that’s the crux of the matter. You have to be open to your own true nature, and to get that openness, you have to clear the thoughts and emotions that obscure it. You’ll never taste that inner peace and clarity if you have a negative attitude towards the process of finding it. If you don’t have the benefit of the presence of someone who can help take you there directly, then you have to take a step by step approach to uncovering it in yourself. That process is called meditation.
Yep. There’s no getting around it. First we need to sit still and experience the peace and clarity during meditation, then we can take that from our cushion or chair into our daily lives. It’s probably not going to be instant, but it may not take as long as you think it will. The trick is to have good instructions and support.
This is the start of a new project for me, one in which I help you to live in peace and clarity.
