Interview with Tanya Taylor, thriller author

August 1, 2017 by Tahlia Newland

Hi Tanya. Welcome to the blog.

First up, what kind of books do you write?

Mystery, thrillers, paranormal, fantasy, and horror are the main genres in which I write. I’ve just recently written my first drama entitled ‘10 Minutes before Sleeping’, but it can also fit comfortably in the romance and thriller categories.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I have been writing since I was a child and published my first book back in 1993 titled ‘A Killing Rage’, published by Carlton Press in New York. I’ve worked as a banker for several years, a proof-reader/editor, and ventured into a number of small businesses before returning to my first love of writing. I am also a ghost-writer and have been privileged to pen the stories of several influential clients who had amazing stories to tell. When I take these jobs on, I am often inspired by the life the client is so gracious to share with the world and I learn something new about life in general by reading and writing about the journey of others.

I reside in The Bahamas, a stone’s throw away from Florida, with my husband and two kids.

Sounds nice. Now the big question: why do you write?

To be completely candid, I really don’t know how not to write these days. So often, a cool, new idea pops into my mind and if I can’t get to it right away, I’ll jot down the idea with intentions of dealing with it later on. Writing, for me, is a part of who I am. If I don’t do it, I feel like I’ll be ignoring a very important part of myself. I believe I have something extraordinary to offer my readers which are the stories I create that hopefully, they will enjoy. It’s a wonderful feeling when people think enough of any particular book of mine to feel compelled to go on and read others that I’ve written, and to even sign up to my mailing list to be notified of new releases.

Tell me about your latest book.

My latest book is the fourth book in a series known as The Cornelius Saga. The title of the book is WE SEE NO EVIL. This book is about the Cullen family coming together and embarking on a road trip to a small, picturesque town. Many of them have very busy lives and they’re all quite happy to be able to retreat to a quiet place and enjoy themselves. However, things don’t turn out the way they expected and gifted Mira finds herself having to come to the aid of a community that is destined to face dire consequences due to a dangerous and shocking cover-up.

The first book in this series is a number one bestseller and all subsequent books have also hit the various bestsellers lists on Amazon. I am so proud of how well this stand-alone series has been received.

That’s wonderful. Congratulations. What is important to you as an author?

To produce good quality stories that my readers will enjoy. That is what’s ultimately important to me as an author. I also appreciate feedback from my readers and love to periodically do something for them in the form of a gift card giveaway or a free book, etc. Without my readers, there would be no point to publishing my stories.

There are a lot of people writing books these days, what makes your writing unique?

Although no single idea might be totally unique, every writer is. The way each writer puts together a plot – a series of events in his or her mind – and executes it, is unique to them. The way I do it makes my own writing unique to me.

What aspects of your personality and interests come through in your books?

I would say my desire to help others; my compassion for the plight of others; and my interest in supernatural aspects of reality.

What kind of person would like your books best?

Anyone with an open mind.

What’s the hardest part of being an author?

What many people don’t realize is that writing a book is a lot of work. A lot of mental energy is exerted, particularly when it comes to revising. For me, writing the first draft is not the hardest part; it’s not even “work” to me only because I tend to enjoy it as I immerse myself in the story. However, when that first draft is completed, that’s when the real work begins. That’s where heavy concentration is needed because things have to line up properly and quality presentation is not just required, but expected.

What do you like most about being an author?

I get to use my gifts and talents in a way that don’t only benefit me, but can bring enjoyment and entertainment to others. It’s a most satisfying feeling.
